Amazon, Google and Microsoft will cut the staff of cloud divisions.

Published: 2023-01-21

According to the Datacenter Dynamics resource, Amazon and Microsoft, as part of large-scale staff reduction programs, intend to lay off some of the employees in their AWS and Azure cloud divisions. So, Amazon announced plans to lay off 18 thousand people, which will be the largest job cuts in its history. In turn, Microsoft will reduce the staff by 5% - about 10 thousand people will lose their jobs. Finally, the IT giant Google announced a serious staff reduction.

As it has now become known, layoffs will affect the AWS division. The cuts are likely to primarily affect members of the cloud platform's recruitment team. Job loss was also reported by some members of the AWS Just Walk Out team, the Software Development team, and Analytics Customer Experience. In Microsoft Azure, there will be layoffs in the sales force, some software tool development teams, and non-revenue teams. There is no data yet on the exact number of laid-off workers in the cloud platforms of Amazon and Microsoft.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella noted that the corporation will continue to invest in strategic areas. At the same time, resources, including labor, will be redistributed in order to develop key areas and ensure competitiveness in the long term. Google will lay off a total of about 12,000 people. As noted by the New York Times, the changes will also affect the cloud division of Google Cloud, where employees who are not related to the client and engineering departments will be reduced. At the same time, Google Cloud plans to continue hiring employees in strategic areas, including product development.
