Microsoft to Close Social VR Platform AltspaceVR and Focus on Mesh Mixed Reality.

Published: 2023-01-22

Microsoft is ending development of AltspaceVR, a social virtual reality platform acquired in 2017 that allowed users to play games, watch videos, and spend time with friends or colleagues in a virtual space in the form of 3D avatars. According to the AltspaceVR development team's Twitter account, the project will be closed on March 10th.

Recall that this week Microsoft announced the dismissal of 10 thousand employees. According to Windows Central, the company plans to cut the entire AltspaceVR team as part of a reorganization. The company will also cut the staff of the team responsible for the development of the HoloLens augmented reality headset.

The company explains the decision to close AltspaceVR with the intention to direct more resources to the development of the Microsoft Mesh mixed reality platform, announced in 2021. Some time after its announcement, a collaboration solution was introduced in the Mesh for Teams metaverse, integrated with the Microsoft Teams service.

The company said that the launch of the Microsoft Mesh platform in the near future will create new jobs around the world. “In the near term, we will be focusing our VR efforts on the workplace experience, learning with and from early customers and partners, and working hard to build a foundation for security, trust and compliance,” the company said.
