Tesla to spend $3.6 billion to build Semi truck and 4680 battery factories in Nevada.

Published: 2023-01-25

Companies prefer to announce plans that can positively influence the mood of investors on the eve of the publication of not the most unambiguous quarterly reports. Perhaps Tesla is also guided by such considerations, which a day before the release of quarterly reports announced that it would invest $ 3.6 billion in expanding production in Nevada, increasing the production of traction batteries and setting up the assembly of Semi electric trucks.

Recall that Tesla began construction of the first Gigafactory class enterprise in 2014 with the participation of Panasonic, which still acts as one of the investors. At that time, it was assumed that $3.5 billion would be spent on the construction of an enterprise in Nevada, capable of producing annually traction batteries with a total capacity of 35 GW‧h, while 6,500 jobs would be created at the same time. In reality, the enterprise has reached the production of batteries with a total capacity of 37 GW‧h annually with a staff of about 11,000 people and a total investment of $6.2 billion. A total of 17,000 more people were involved in the construction of the enterprise.

Since its inception, the Nevada gigafactory has produced 7.3 million battery cells, 1.5 million off-the-shelf batteries, and 3.6 million electric vehicle powerplants, as well as 1 million stationary power storage units with a combined capacity of over 14 GWh.

An additional $3.6 billion was announced this week to expand Nevada's traction battery business and mass-assemble Tesla Semi trucks, which have been produced here in small numbers since last quarter. According to Tesla, Nevada will be home to the first dedicated Semi truck assembly facility. They are also planned to be assembled in Texas, and how this is combined with the new Tesla solution is not specified.

In Nevada, Tesla's workforce will grow by another 3,000 people, with a dedicated 4680 lithium battery facility capable of producing 100 GWh of batteries per year in terms of total capacity. This should be enough to equip two million passenger electric vehicles with batteries annually. How this decision will affect Tesla's intentions to expand production of 4680 batteries in Texas has not yet been specified.

Exactly how the two new facilities will be located in relation to the existing one is not reported, but judging by the above computer sketch, there is enough space next to the existing L-shaped building for the location of new production lines. As a result, the entire complex will be able to take the form of a parallelepiped with bevelled corners and solar panels installed on the roof.
