Latest Optane: Intel to offer PMem 300 modules for Xeon Sapphire Rapids and Emerald Rapids.Published: 2023-01-15
Despite the fact that the page of history dedicated to the creation of Optane non-volatile memory is officially closed by Intel, the third generation of DCPMM modules will still see the light and complement the Sapphire Rapids and Emerald Rapids platforms (if they remain available by that time). This became known thanks to a slide published on Twitter. Despite belonging to the third generation PMem 300 (Crow Pass) modules, they use second generation crystals, four-layer Barlow Pass. The Crow Pass uses the new Crow Valley controller with DDR-T2 interface. This interface allows you to create Optane PMem pools up to 4 TB per socket (8x512 GB). In addition, the DDR-T2 bus operates at twice the frequency of the memory cells. And if PMem 200 offered a 3200 MT/s interface, then PMem 300 will implement speeds of 4000-4400 MT/s, which more or less corresponds to the parameters of DDR5 DRAM modules, which usually have a speed of 4800 MT/s in server systems. The performance will increase accordingly. The data is given for the 2RW1 mode (two reads per write), and if the first generation of PMem is limited to 4 GB / s, and the second stops at 4.83 GB / s, then the third will be able to develop linear speeds around 6 GB / s . The performance in random operations will increase even more, from 1–1.2 GB / s to 3 GB / s. In addition, protocols for saving data in the event of a power loss will be added to Crow Pass - in addition to the usual ADR mode, FastADR will appear. Like previous generations of PMem, Optane PMem 300 will be able to work in App Direct mode, as a complement to conventional DRAM, and in mixed mode. The heat pack of the new products, by the way, has not changed and is the same 15 W with the possibility of a short-term increase to improve performance if there is a cooling margin. |
