Cloud giants will start receiving 3nm chips from TSMC in the second half of the year.

Published: 2023-01-15

At the last quarterly conference, TSMC management confirmed that the company's revenue from the supply of 3-nm products will reach significant values only in the second quarter, although formally mass production of chips of this generation began in the last quarter. According to TSMC representatives, "cloud giants" are actively interested in the possibility of producing chips of their own design, and some 3-nm product will become one of them in the second half of the year.

CEO of TSMC C.C. Wei explained that by the end of 2023, the revenue from the sale of 3nm products will reach 5-6% of the total, and in absolute terms, it will be higher than that of 5nm technology in its first year on the market. The release of products based on the improved N3E technology will begin in the second half of this year. TSMC customers are interested in using 3nm technology, the number of digital projects is already twice the number of projects using 5nm technology in the first and second years of its life cycle.

The CEO also admitted that expanding the 3nm product portfolio in the second half of the year will help TSMC's revenue growth in this period: “The expansion of the N3 process technology will help the business return to growth. In fact, as I would like to share with you, through orders from a major HPC client. In the second half of the year, a new product related to the segment of artificial intelligence and acceleration of calculations will be presented.

CC Wei later added, “Some hyperscale customers want to develop their own chips. Some of our customers in this sector are working with TSMC to develop their own chips." There is no reason to fear that the demand for advanced lithography from customers will decline, as the TSMC executive explained. Apparently, already in the second half of the year, the company will begin to supply one of the "cloud giants" with accelerators of artificial intelligence systems developed for their needs. Probably, we are talking about Amazon, Microsoft, Google or Meta ( Facebook ). Rumors also attribute Chinese Baidu's interest in collaborating with Samsung to produce 3nm chips for its server systems. It is possible that Chinese customers are in no hurry to cooperate with TSMC due to fear of US sanctions, which have already significantly harmed Huawei Technologies' business.
