Apple fined 1.1 billion rubles in Russia for imposing its payment system.

According to the press service of the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of Russia, Apple violated antitrust laws by obliging Russian developers to use only its payment system in their applications and forbidding the use of other payment methods. For this, she was fined 1.1 billion rubles.


“This is the amount the company has to pay for abuse of dominance. In July 2022, the service recognized the company as violating antitrust laws. Apple imposed on Russian developers of iOS applications the need to use the company's payment tool in their applications, ”said the FAS representative.


The fine must be paid within two months from the date the document on the imposition of the fine comes into force, the press service of the Federal Antimonopoly Service specified.


On December 15 last year, Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media Maksut Shadayev announced that the Ministry of Digital Development intends to prepare a bill similar to the European one, which will oblige Apple to allow downloading third-party applications and paying through alternative payment systems in Russia. The minister planned to submit a bill to the State Duma in the first quarter of 2023.


Apple is preparing to allow alternative app stores on its iPhones and iPads and download third-party apps as part of changes to comply with European Union requirements coming into effect in 2024. Apple platform for third-party developers who will be able to bypass the company's restrictions and not pay a commission of up to 30% on user payments. These updates may arrive in iOS 17 next year.
