Electronics manufacturers have reached out from Asia to Mexico - it's more convenient to work with the US market.

Published: 2023-01-24

The so-called "trade war" between the United States and China under President Donald Trump prompted many manufacturers to move their enterprises from China to other countries, and the pandemic, with its logistical difficulties, only increased the desire of many companies to locate the production of goods for the local market, if not in the United States. then at the borders of this country. Mexico has become a promising destination for such migration.

As the Nikkei Asian Review explains, Taiwanese company Foxconn recently set up a regional headquarters in Mexico to better manage local businesses. Foxconn has historically been Apple's largest contract manufacturer, but in recent years the company has decided to diversify into the contract manufacturing of electric vehicles. To do this, Lordstown Motors was bought in Ohio, which will organize the assembly of not only electric pickups of the same brand, but also Fisker crossovers. INDI EV should also become a Foxconn client in this area.

In addition to Ohio, Foxconn's EV-related facilities will be located in Wisconsin and Mexico, people familiar with the matter say. Other Taiwanese manufacturers that focus on PCs and server hardware are set to increase their presence in Mexico this year as well. These include Pegatron, Quanta Computer, Compal Electronics and Inventec.

Pegatron supplies electronics for the needs of Tesla and General Motors, so its decision to locate enterprises in Mexico was also influenced by the adoption by the US authorities of the so-called Inflation Reduction Act, which provides for subsidizing purchases of electric vehicles by US citizens, subject to a high degree of localization of their component base. The location of production in Mexico allows core products to comply with the requirements of this law.

Taiwanese experts say Mexico is a familiar place for local tech suppliers, as many of them have had home appliance and computer manufacturing facilities in Mexico for decades. Many of these businesses in Mexico have recently been repurposed and modernized. The policy of the US leadership can greatly influence the activities of Asian manufacturers.
